Thank you for this conversation. So grateful to Haidt for continuing to research and speak out on these topics. I often find Brooks a little simplistic but this was an important framing of these issues.

Pardon the cliché, and I’ve never said this before, but what a privilege to listen to these two insightful gentlemen together. I’ve learned so much from their books and their podcasts.

I’d like to push back a little bit. Prior to the mid 60s most American corporations were run by engineers. After that, it became MBA’s and lawyers. I don’t think the concentration of rationalists is the problem, I feel it is a concentration of money. It makes people insane. This is simply an opinion based on observation.Image 19: ✌🏽Image 20: 🦊Image 21: 🖤Image 22: 🐾

While, with AI, the cost of intelligence drops exponentially, wisdom remains stubbornly expensive, paid for in time, humility, suffering, and the courage to know what not to do.

Surprised that the immense and v relevant work of Iain McGilchrist was not referenced! But what a tremendous conversation!

The really sad thing about young people and obsessive social media use is they most likely are not reading books. That is a really big loss for them. Reading great books stimulates creativity thought and imagination. It will be interesting how this generation will manage the world as adults in a world which is definitely going to be exceptionally difficult and complex.

I was listening to your conclusions about optimisation and efficacity and you forgot that we ended there because those were applied to economies not societies. I am curious to see the Chinese views on social cohesion the promotion of uplifthing emotions instead of the use of force or repression to obtain it. ;)

Jonathan's claims are bunk. I want to agree with him but his claims are not born out by the data. Decoding the Gurus did a great deep dive into his claims. David, please do more research.

18:48 Is it possible that we are misconstruing 'unconscious' with genetic predisposition? Perhaps achieving 'unconscious desires' is simply aligning ourselves with trait-channel fit?

Long before he became famous as the author of The Anxious Generation, Jonathan Haidt was a social psychologist whose work revolutionized the field. In this episode of The Permanent Questions, taped in front of a live audience at last month’s Atlantic Festival, David Brooks talks with Haidt about his biggest lessons from 40 years of studying human nature. David and Haidt discuss the role of the emotions in moral decision making, how to design a system that produces less loathsome elites, and why AI is “the neutron bomb for education.” Subscribe to “The Permanent Questions” podcast on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast...
