PS5 Jailbreaks Are Escalating at an Unprecedented Pace, and Sony Must Be Sweating

This is fine.png

Image: Push Square

A game of cat-and-mouse between Sony and hackers is very much underway, as the PS5 has been jailbroken to a massive degree in the past week.

Legally we’re walking on thin ice here, but we can report on a new jailbreak which opens up the console, as long as it’s running firmware v7.00 through v13.60.

Firmware v13.60 was released in July, so is relatively recent. It means the jailbreak will run on most consoles not using the latest system software. (Although it should be noted that recent releases like Marvel’s Wolverine require a newer firmware to boot, so they remain off limits.)

Subscribe to Push Square on YouTube 172k

Armed with AI tools, modders have already been able to install a variety of different emulators on Sony’s console, running from Switch through to the original Xbox. While performance is patchy, it’s utterly remarkable how fast this has all escalated in the past week.

It’s also leading to a run on consoles, as hobbyists rush to purchase hardware with the desired firmware installed. That may be part of the reason why GameStop is now charging up to $1,500 for a used PS5 Pro.

What’s particularly fascinating is that, simultaneously, PC emulation of the PS5 is also developing fast. So far modders have found ways to run several exclusives, like Demon’s Souls, on the PC.

Obviously we’re not going to link to any of the repositories here, but I think it’s important to acknowledge this is all happening.

Some people have attached the pace of the development of these jailbreaks to Sony’s decision to stop manufacturing physical discs, but as we’ve seen with other consoles, hackers rarely need an incentive to deploy these kinds of exploits.

I imagine we’re going to see an increase in firmware updates over the coming weeks, as the platform holder tries to tighten up any security holes – but obviously that’s not going to prevent these exploits from working on older firmware.

It’s possible this may hasten the firm’s transition to the PS6, but it just depends how prevalent and problematic these jailbreaks become I suppose. It’s too early to say right now.

At the rate things have developed over the past week, I think Sony may have a pretty big headache on its hands here.

Out of every bad decision they made, off-sourcing their support offshore is what pissed me off the most, and I would happily jailbreak my console and stop paying them.

Image 31: AdamNovice

Never seen the fascination myself, I'm just used the plug and play nature of gaming. But people in general always like to tinker with things since the beginning of civilization.

Image 32: LuigiDude96

Well I guess that will help preserve video games during the digital only future we are heading to

Image 33: Oram77

Wasn't the Switch 2 jail broken within 3 days of release?

Image 34: Olskeezy

Can't wait for the inevitable "We got RPCS3 to run on a PS5!" post.

Which I'm all for. Recently jailbroke by PS3 for a variety of reasons. Best thing I could've done with a 15 year old thing.

Image 35: Bot_Bot_69

Unfortunately this may end being the kind of thing that companies use to justify streaming only systems eventually. If you don't have the software stored locally you can't tamper as much.

Image 36: DoubleDip

Sony and Nintendo are going to have major headaches with this, due to AI helping people crack the consoles. A move to PS6 will just be a temporary band aid. Decomps and recomps are another thing that may be even more concerning for them, allowing a PS game rom to be played natively (not emulated) on PC, or even android, maybe even xbox. There are a lot of people out there who are pissed off at sony (and rockstar - gta6 recomp?) who are doing this out of spite.

Image 37: NessunDorma

I wouldn’t worry if I were them. It’s unlikely to “have any appreciable impact on digital sales”. But if it were I think they’ll probably suddenly have the funds and means to improve their security. It’s just with regards to stolen accounts that there’s “nothing they can do”.

Image 38: GirlVersusGame

I might as well admit it, I did jailbreak the original base-model. A couple of people already sussed it and asked in private, I did.

My thinking and justification was: I bought this machine, and I bought hundreds of PS2 discs. I'd been previously using a PS2 to play those wonderful games on that machine and when I did get a line on that most recent jailbreak it was too tempting not to try. I won't go into specifics (I don't want to break any site rules) just to say that jailbreaks like that aren't easy, Loaders are often a game of Chinese whispers and you can brick a machine doing it.

I'd never advocate for piracy or cheating the system when Developers put blood sweat and tears into their games, and while PS2 was many generations ago, what's on the horizon is worse and could affect current-gen too. Sony need to deal with the problem before it gets worse. I haven't tested any Xbox discs on my machine and the very idea of being able to do that makes me question 'if this team can make it so my PS2 games run on this PS5 at x6 times the resolution then why am I paying Sony to emulate games on Plus+'

The same team are working on PC Windows Games emulations, I'm following it closely on that side of the deepweb, it's impossible not to. That said Satan himself (the user) tipped me off on an amazing handheld this weekend which I quickly ordered so I'm about to try Emulation in the form of Retro Roms. I want to support Sony, to continue to buy games, but when it comes to PS2? There was no force on Earth that would have talked me out of doing that. If they add Playstation One to the Loader then those are next. I've been buying extra memory to back-up/store and play hundreds of PS2 titles and it's more than Sony seem to be doing. Which is sad to admit.

Image 39: ShadowRJ

I do suspect the decision to stop physical discs is playing a part but not in the "I'm doing this to renegade Sony" kind of way. I can see it being "I need to do this quickly, so the disc lovers can hail me as a hero" kind of way.

Image 40: dskatter

Funny how the work on this has accelerated since, oh, say, the beginning of July.

Keep up the good work, Sony! You’re your own worst enemy right now, and I’m here for it. You get what you deserve.

Image 41: Futureshark

I watched a YouTube the other day (research purposes only, far too chicken to risk it), it's incredibly easy!!

I was expecting at least a mod chip but no, just a few changes to DNS settings and a sneaky trick via the user guide and boom, the kernel opens up like a cracked nut.

I guess this is the nuclear response to the discless society, digital piracy running rampant (as already seen in the PC community).

Image 42: Cry_Zero

While im not a fan of pirating new games, i love this. These guys even made ps3 games playable on ps5. Something sony claims is impossible at the moment. I hope they f sony up even more with this. Sony has to learn that they should never disrespect their fanbase like they did with cancelling of discs. Keep on emulating!

Image 43: belmont

To be honest all those recent developments are more due to AI tools, they do not correlate to what companies do or do not do with physical games.

I haven't tried a PS4 or PS5 jailbreak yet but I have experience in PSP, Vita and 3DS. All those platforms were popular in the emulation community. It was cool running all PS1 games on the Vita or making every Nintendo portable game appear in the home screen of the 3DS.

Image 44: NessunDorma

Whatever big Corpos try to stop, the community will thwart. That's why I don't really care about physical or digital, the community WILL ensure this games always continue to exist.

Image 45: GirlVersusGame

@ShadowRJ It was in the works before then, but the people who are doing it and talking about it in chatrooms have cited 'no disc no busy' as justification. I take justification with a pinch of salt, I see all kinds of things being justified from Ethical hacking to Emulation and piracy. Right now the jailbreak system isn't going to impact Sony, only the Retro market. But if the next phaze works, and leaves it's Alpha then it absolutely will. It's like I said over the weekend about game piracy, the surface-web is only tracking those known trackers, the deepweb ones show the real impact on peer2peer game piracy. Which is why I bought Plague Tale, I've never played the series but did see it leak one-week early and watched the Developers get robbed in real-time.

To me it was sickening, to everyone else it was GGs. That said I've been backing up my PS2 library to memory now, I love my discs and beautiful boxes but would you say now to playing a PS2 game on a comfortable dual-sense at six times the resolution?

Image 46: NessunDorma

The hack is as simple as altering ps5s dns which activates exploit. Its also undetectable as its completely removed next boot. Emulators must be equally worrying. Wolverine up and running on PC now. ... i am dabbling a bit ... I am playing Astro Bot Rescue Mission on pc/Quest 3 just now after the mod dropped couple days ago. 144hz and 4k. Might be the best looking VR game ever now that the shackles of PSVR have been removed. Hopefully other games (Statick please) stuck in PSVR limbo will be playable soon.

Image 47: jly1987

I hate modern gamers

Image 48: Deadlyblack

I've been keeping an eyeball on the emulation side of things and it's genuinely impressive what they're pulling off in such a short window.

Image 49: ShadowRJ

@GirlVersusGame Oh I'm aware of all this. I'm not saying it's what's motivating the hackers to do it, I'm saying it's motivating the hackers to get it done faster and more efficiently because they'll be more likely be praised for going after "the big bad corporation". Hackers like attention more often than not.

Image 50: DennisReynolds

@dskatter Maybe if most PS5 players didn't support digital things would be different. Gamers are their worst own enemy.

Image 51: naruball

All the more reason the higher ups who made the decision to stop physical games should be fired.

Image 52: Gaia093

I couldn't care less about Sony losing money through piracy, but I do think it's a shame PS5 games will inevitably get flooded with cheaters soon enough.

Image 53: Midgar777

@GirlVersusGame "That said Satan himself (the user) tipped me off on an amazing handheld this weekend which I quickly ordered so I'm about to try Emulation in the form of Retro Roms."

Sounds cool - what was it?

Image 54: NessunDorma

This is good news, as far as I'm concerned. Hope it goes faster, too, including the PS6.

Image 55: Max_the_German

That means many people can enjoy Bloodborne, RDR2 and other PS4 games in 60 fps. If the publishers don’t bring the patches, the community will!

Image 56: nessisonett

@Olskeezy Saw Quest for Booty running in 4K at 60FPS on the PS5. Puts Sony to shame with their lack of action on PS3 backwards compatibility.

Image 57: darylb24

Probably won't have a significant impact, as most consumers want a plug-and-play experience. Jailbroken consoles have been around since the PS1, and they haven't affected sales. They seem to just quietly coexist.

And no, the PS5 was not jailbroken because of the removal of Discs; it was jailbroken because every single console has been or will be jailbroken for those in the minority with the technical skills who want to play different things or get a different experience.

Image 58: GirlVersusGame

@ShadowRJ That's part of the thinking too, the comments on here about fluff Sony/etc, the ones we've been seeing since this no disc future announcement pale in comparison. It's hard to put into words because there are many camps and existing ideologies over there, each one justifies it's existence and Ethical hacking did eventually colour my own thinking too. So for me a disc'less future has Ethical implications. i.e. parts of the world depend on physical imports, VPN detection has become stronger while customer protection has become weaker, and ultimately censorship is tipped to become worse because of those regional locks. We monitor both the Russian side and Ukrainian side for account bans (due to VPNS) and we're both being hit with them. We discuss it regularly on Telegram/Tor/etc, try to track the numbers. So what do people do when they lose their account over red-tape?

Image 59: Untitled

  • Visit vendors like this, buy an account (previously verified) and source an imported machine to match the account. This is because of sanctions and because Sony have made it so easy to hijack accounts. I could buy accounts all day long for pennies on the dollar, would I? never, I respect the person who was robbed even if I don't know them, but others do it regardless.

I look at it like this: I have two copies of the Harry Potter game, one my Government censored the use of 'wife' out of because it was two ladies, and the other the UK copy. Most people don't live under heavy censorship so they won't understand my stance but it's there for a reason. Many share my mood on censorship and many look to hacking and jailbreaking as an Ethical response to censorship, and to a lack of availability. You and I have talked countless times about physical/digital and we both share the same love of the disc, but my views on everything else I mentioned have to be felt by the person to truly understand it. I had books burnt in-front of me to send a particular message, I'll never allow that to happen to my games and if Sony don't preserve what's there then I will.

@Midgar777 That's a mighty beard you have, it was called the Retroid Pocket Duo, I think it just released. I considered doing it with a Steam Deck or jailbreaking a Switch but a dedicated handheld means I'm supporting a company doing what I believe in. I thought it shipped today when I saw an order pop-up, it was the Lego Playstation instead. I think the handheld is coming from America, I have some thousand Roms ready to put on the machine. At the same time I use Retro as a history lesson, and a way to appreciate a past that I never experienced so I do play on the original consoles. I'm hoping a handheld doesn't altar that. If a jailbroken PS5 does then I'll go back to firing up the old console. This current jailbreak is to me a system for preservation, not manipulation, we need to save these games not allow them to vanish into the abyss of copyright/censorship and greed. Also Satan is the name of a man on this site. I don't mean the literal Dark Lord, but he could be.

Image 60: McBurn

This might boost PS5 sales xD

Image 61: TheArt

@Cry_Zero Wow but why would Sony hide PS5's ability to play PS3 games...

Image 62: JustBusiness

Imagine being able to just boot up your PS5 and playing any PS2 game you want. That would be heaven, but I wouldn't know how to emulate them or anything like that.

Image 63: FreasurePlanten

@Olskeezy No need to wait, there is a version of RPCS3 on PS5 already. Not to mention you can play it through Linux if you're on update 11.6 or below.
Also, the article contains incorrect information: you can play Wolverine on 13.60.

Image 64: VeganH

Sony: we will be taking our single player games off pc.

Pc users: hold mah beer.

Image 65: FreasurePlanten

@fluggy Is this on ShadPS4?

Image 66: NessunDorma

I had a PS5 in my bedroom that wasn't used much since the Pro replaced it as the main machine and it was on 13.6, so I figured it would be great to use as an emulation and retro machine. Works beautifully, and playing Mario Odyssey on it feels very weird! Best of both worlds as I still have the Pro for my PSN account and everything else.

@FreasurePlanten Yeah Wolverine almost certainly the last new game that will work on it, zero chance GTA VI or anything else from now onwards will.

Image 67: GloriosaDaisy

I've been using my ps5 as jailbroken for the past year and a half now and it's been the best experience I've had with gaming. Unofficial 60fps patches for ps4 games, actually decent video player that plays any video I throw at it and supports subtitles and more recently things like RetroArch, ps2 emulation that can run games at 4k 60fps with 60fps patches and HD texture packs, Switch emulation and all the other emulators including the upcoming ones like the ps3 emu. And soon they'll bring Linux support for higher firmwares so I'll be able to play PC games and have free online play. Life's good lol.

Image 68: NessunDorma

Jailbroken are always better than stock and not always done for piracy reasons. Jailbreaking just unlocks the true potential of a machine

Image 69: spottedleaf

@ZorkDuskbloods I honestly have to agree, god forbid citizens in the country they operate in have jobs

Image 70: NessunDorma

@FreasurePlanten yeah...uses shadps4. Theres an auto installer specifically for Astro Bot Rescue Mission though.

Image 71: NessunDorma

With how expensive the hardware is, i am not going to risk briking it. Keeping to original.

Image 72: FreasurePlanten

@TheSingularity Absolutely. And now that they have patched the last known hypervisor exploit in patch 14.10, it will be interesting to see if the hackers' determination can beat the security measures that will surely be in place around GTA VI's launch.

Image 73: FreasurePlanten

@fluggy Thanks. I'll definitely look into it once Valve sends me the Steam Frame email.

Image 74: The_Elder

@get2sammyb check this out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5zkzon0gM4

Image 75: Number09

@Bot_Bot_69 Its the only way to crack the hackers dare I say bring the prices down too.

Image 76: themightyant

@The_Elder Yep! It's pretty scary/exciting (delete as applicable) what can be done with games and AI.

Image 77: SoulsBourne128

Was really insane to see a literal Xbox 360 emulator running on a PS5

Image 78: A-steak-with-ketchup

Sony isn't sweating. You do realize that if jail breaking went from 1 in 100,000 people to 10 in 100,000 people that could be considered an "unprecedented" amount of people, right? But hardly a dent in the overall player base. But it's hardly an actual concern. Because Sony deals in the law of averages. And the average person is never going to jail break their console. Or their phone. Or anything else. Because the average person barely knows how to turn those things on. The average person also still doesn't care about a discless future. This is still just niche internet groups who think they represent the actual majority. I imagine this is another big nothing to Sony but fun for us internet dwellers to drone about.

Image 79: NessunDorma

Lots of PS5s sat in storage, either Sony's own or other retail partners, will also presumably be on vulnerable firmware given the date they would have been manufactured.

Image 80: Bot_Bot_69

@GirlVersusGame If it's NDS and 3DS games you want to play then I'd personally recommend a pre-owned 2DS, 3DS, "new" 2DSXL or "new" 3DSXL. All of which have incredibly easy "tweaks" now that make them super simple to install pretty much everything up to PS1. You can also play online using the Pretendo network. I've heard the retroid has some touchscreen latency issues and some other things. Might be very good still but as the official hardware is so easy to work with I personally would just use that, they hold up really well too.

Image 81: NessunDorma

Sounds like great news to me

Image 82: Krlozgod

I don’t feel sorry for Sony about this but I do feel bad for the third party publishers and developers. I don’t support piracy for games that can be still bought this year alone I have made more purchases on the VITA and PS3 stores than the previous five years combined.

Image 83: GirlVersusGame

@Bot_Bot_69 Other than I think Nintendogs I don't think I've played any Nintendo handheld games but for the Gameboy, I'm sure I do have 3DS lurking somewhere. It's mostly Sega Mega-Drive, the Master System and the Super Nintendo that I've been experimenting with (the actual machines) after Sammy said the best Crazy Taxi was on the Dreamcast I sourced one of those too. Pretendo is the name of our games company on fantasy critic, it's either a coincidence or my co-company owner stole the name) Boobisoft is another (That's Ravix's, obviously) I wouldn't know where to start with Nintendo handheld games, outside of Tetris, Kirby and a Mario game. I'm going to get a Gamecube too, and I've tried the Wii, N64 too.

Image 84: CielloArc

Well, if you keep shooting yourself in the foot EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. then you shouldn't complain once it starts bleeding all over the place.

The lesson learned here is you shouldn't antagonize your consumer base.

Image 85: NessunDorma

The future is not streaming games, the future is paying Sony £2000 for a virtual playstation that streams games but you won't really 'own' it.

Image 86: Cry_Zero

@TheArt no idea but ive seen some games run at 4k@60

Image 87: Bot_Bot_69

@GirlVersusGame On 2/3DS my favourites would be Luigi's Mansion 2, Tetris games, the 3D Pokemons, Mario Golf World Tour, Mario Kart 7, the other Marios, the Zelda titles too and Animal Crossing New Leaf is worth it for a bit too.

If you do pick up a GameCube there are some excellent hardware mods you can do now very easily, many are plug and play. There's one that's good for keeping your disc drive working in the long term where you basically fit an internal SD card reader into it that lets you dump your discs and not have to keep getting them out of the cases.

The Wii U has a surprisingly good selection of games and it's just a fun system to use with the whole dual screen thing, especially games that use the gamepad screen well for things like extra HUD stuff and maps. It also supports Pretendo Network where you can use your 2/3DS ID and keep the same friends list.

Have you had the opportunity to try an Analogue 3D yet? As N64 is my all time fav console I've been all over that. I really wanna pick up an Analogue Pocket too some time (the FPGA Gameboy).

I had a Dreamcast many years ago, sadly I sold it, though I randomly still have Sonic Adventure on a shelf next to me. Loved the controller on that thing.

Also are you running your older consoles through a CRT or a modern flat screen?

Image 88: NessunDorma

Man I’d hate to be a PlayStation exec right now. I don’t know how many of them pay attention to news like this, but recently KytyPS5 has been making insane progress running (not just booting) and playing exclusives with the hope from some that it’ll be running GTA VI before the PC version, and now you got this jailbreak that I’m pretty sure my base PS5 is eligible for since I haven’t used it in over a year since getting my Pro.

The lack of backwards compatibility support from Sony and being able to play my PS2 and PS3 games on my PS5 is really tempting.

Image 89: BacklogBrad

They deserve this with all the you dont own your games crap and forcing digital on everyone.

Image 90: GirlVersusGame

@Bot_Bot_69 It's a big Silver Sony something CRT television, another is a big silver something else. WaveBoy asked me before and I knew it was a CRT but that was about it. I have unboxed VCRs/etc too, I watch a lot VHS tapes and prefer to go fully old school with the experience so CRT is the way. When I see a lot of Retro gamers they have tiny CRTs, the bigger ones seem rare. I'm assuming they were recycled, which means some consoles probably were too.

Luigi's Mansion is a game that I'm frequently being told to try on the Switch, I did put some serious time into Breath of the Wild (and Animal Crossing) but as for Mario I've only played that Gameboy one, All Stars (a little) and Sunhshine (with the water pack) I've never touched Pokemon and only know one (Sylveon) I haven't seen the game or played it or the cartoons. I'm pretty sure I was told it was evil so I couldn't have it, which goes back to what I said about censorship. I'll get to it eventually, everyone else seems to have played or seen it. Palworld was my introduction to monster catching, people see it and 'oh kat that's a rip-off of such aMon', if I ever play Pokemon I'll think it's a rip-off of each Pal in my game.

I never heard of analogue 3D until you mentioned it, I just looked and had no idea someone developed a machine like that. I assumed companies like Nintendo would sue hardware companies into oblivion if they tried to build those machines. I'm looking at one now called The SuperStation and it comes in black, I need to start testing these things, I was reading one about it's memory card (looked down) and saw you talking about it in the comments. It was Time Extension.

Image 91: NessunDorma

Hack the Planet!

Image 92: woopox

@Oram77 Not at all

Image 93: GirlVersusGame

@jeff19023 I hope people know the reference, there's still a pool on the roof for those who don't.

Image 94: Bot_Bot_69

@GirlVersusGame Sounds a good setup! I don't trust that my old VHS tapes could wind on without disintegrating by now. Sadly I don't have space for a CRT currently. I use a lot of HDMI mods and converters, though I quite fancy a Retrotink 4K. Oh yeah the Superstation sounds awesome! The disc drive attachment looks good too. I love TimeExtension, they've got loads of great interviews with the devs of my favourite games as a child (even now actually), Rare.

Image 95: GirlVersusGame

@Bot_Bot_69 I visited the site for the first time last night, I saw Robin Williams on a thumbnail and you can't not click on a picture like that. Then I learned about the advert he did for Nintendo and that his daughter was name Zelda. It was really wholesome. After that I read a bunch of other articles. I looked into a possible PS2 version of the SuperStation too and saw that there are no third-party machines. It's all down to the engine and architecture they used while building it. Hopefully someone cracks it, this is a great new side of gaming/technology that I was completely unaware of.

Image 96: NessunDorma

PS5 is boutta be jailbroken as much as the Wii lol

Image 97: NessunDorma

i see no problems jailbreaking a console, but i think it should be done after the generation is over, i prefer supporting the developers i like, to be honest and get more games.

Image 98: Boxmonkey

Good! I only wish we could go back to the ps2 days again so I could never give Sony a penny again

I'm already looking forward to seeing the dumbfounded looks on people's faces when Sony bans their accounts.

And legally, Sony has every right to do so.

hypothetical question. I understand you must be offline for obvious reasons, but what if game need online connection all the time? Can you play those games? I mean single player games, you play solo, but game want you to be connected to their servers. Can you play solo offline for example Diablo 4 ((If I am not mistaken, that game require online connection)
Can this hack someone simulate it?
probably no and it is stupid question, but just out of curiosity.
thanks

@Boxmonkey , honestly I dont understand this stand. Like, I used to use torrents for years, for many different reasons. But PS is basically the best console for many decades now. Simply because they made some stupid decisions over last year, it doesnt really mean everything is bad.
PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4... there is definitely more good memories than bad one. PS5 is still twice as good as MS if you think about it. Sony still produced more games with much higher quality.
Yes, Sony made some bad, weird or terrible decisions lately, but would you rather give money to MS? For what? More than decade MS is strictly against AAA games and absolutely against SP games... they were forced to buy studios, so they dont need to make own games and now half of those studios is gone. So, I dont know. I am not trying to pretent Sony is perfect, because its not and it is corporation greedy for money, which is understandable, but I think there are still the best company for making the best quality games.
MS has Forza... thats it and Switch is 95per for kids, how many games for adults you have there? Very little... so, I dont know

@fluggy
". Its also undetectable"

It's a RAM patch so if the console is connected online, it's very much detectable.

@NessunDorma
The reason is most people are silly and can only remember that last 6 months!

Everyone is quick the forget this time last year when Astrobot and Death Stranding 2 were about to be released and everyone loved Sony.

But because Sony want to drag these people into the 21st century and go all digital, the forever virgins are upset they wont have plastic boxes to look at.

As usual, modders creates, what Sony won't.
Like being able to play PS3 games, rendered in higher resolution and framerates, basically remastering the entire catalogue.

@NessunDorma yeah I had great memories of ps2 and I didn’t buy one game for the console. I just rented them from blockbuster and cloned them. Great times! Also you underestimate how much I want the gaming market to crash and burn. The quicker it happens the quicker a new more consumer friendly market will rise from the ashes.
